Change · The region in motion

The most important changes are happening at different speeds.

Resident growth and job growth do not rise together. Comparing their actual measurement periods reveals which cities are becoming stronger job centers, which are becoming more residential, and where the two are moving together.

Fastest resident growth

Port Orchard grew fastest from 2021–2026.

Its population changed +28% during that period.

For Port Orchard, the immediate test is whether homes, roads, schools, and local jobs expanded at a similar pace. If they did not, residents will feel the imbalance in prices, crowding, or longer trips.

Population moved the other way

Bonney Lake lost the most residents from 2021–2026.

Its population changed +0% during that period.

The next local question is what drove the decline: fewer available homes, smaller households, an aging population, or weaker demand. Those explanations call for very different responses.

Jobs moved faster

DuPont posted the strongest job growth from 2018–2023.

Local jobs changed +39% during that period.

If resident growth lagged, DuPont likely became more dependent on inbound workers. That puts added importance on commute routes and nearby housing—not just the employment number itself.

How the measures connect

Resident growth and job growth do not move in lockstep.

Cities gaining residents faster than jobs may become more commuter-oriented. Cities adding jobs faster than residents may draw more workers across city lines and place different demands on transportation and commercial space.
