Civic life · who represents you in Delaware

There is no mayor on the ballot for 78 of Delaware’s 79 places.

Washington’s cities each elect their own mayor or council-manager government. Delaware works differently: outside Wilmington, the closest thing most of these 79 places have to an identifiable elected representative is whoever holds their State House and Senate seat—district lines that were drawn for the legislature, not for any one town or city.

Boundaries don’t line up

34 of 79 places span more than one legislative district

State House and Senate district lines are redrawn for population balance, not municipal shape, so a single place routinely falls under several incumbents at once.

The extreme caseWilmington alone spans 5 House districts and 3 Senate districts—more overlapping legislative representation than any other Delaware place in this collection.

State House

39 of Delaware’s 41 House districts touch a covered place

25 held by Democrats, 14 held by Republicans, counting each district once regardless of how many places it touches.

State Senate

All 21 of Delaware’s Senate districts touch a covered place

15 held by Democrats, 6 held by Republicans, counting each district once regardless of how many places it touches.

The one full roster

Wilmington is the only place with its own council directory

A president, 4 at-large members, and 8 district representatives run the city’s own government, on top of its legislative delegation above.

Why the other 78 places don’t have one56 incorporated municipalities have no statewide directory of their own mayor, council, or meeting schedule—Delaware has nothing like Washington’s MRSC covering every city. The remaining 22 places are unincorporated census-designated places with no town government to direct at all.

Find your own town

The other 78 places run their own elections separately.

Incorporated municipalities besides Wilmington set their own charters, election dates, and meeting schedules, and Delaware runs no single statewide directory of them the way it does for legislative seats. Check each town’s own site, or the state’s municipal-elections page, before relying on a name here for a current officeholder.
